Red flags to watch out for when screening tenants (II)

By Deborah Ephraim • 2/10/2026

As a landlord in Nigeria, you know how important it is to settle with the right tenant to avoid disheartening stories later on. Screening tenants well can save you from damages to your property later on. Here are five key red flags to look out for. These aren't automatic disqualifiers, but they should make you dig deeper.

Inconsistent Rental History: If the applicant's story about where they've lived before doesn't add up, or there are big gaps without good reasons, it might mean they're not reliable. Always call their old landlords and ask why they left.

Poor Credit Score: A bad credit report could show they're struggling with money, like owing bills or debts. Not everyone has a perfect score, but if it's consistently low, they might delay rent or not pay at all.

Eviction Records: Past evictions are a serious sign. They often mean issues like not paying rent or damaging property. Check court records or ask for details to be sure.

Evasive or Dishonest Behavior: During the interview or application, if they avoid questions, give vague answers, or seem too secretive, it could be hiding something big, like a criminal record or hidden debts.

Unstable Employment: If they've been jumping from job to job or are out of work without a clear plan, that's worrying. Tenants need steady income to afford rent, so verify their job and make sure they have a solid way to pay.

By catching these red flags early, you protect your property and yourself. Trust your gut and the Homxe application to get you covered.
